Mikhail A. TROITSKIY


Dr Mikhail Troitskiy is associate director of the Moscow Office of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

He also works aprt-time as an associate professor of international relations at the Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Russia, Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). His areas of academic interest and expertise include Russian foreign policy, Russia’s relations with the neighbouring states, the European Union, the United States as well as a broad range of Eurasian security issues.

Mikhail Troitskiy was born in St Petersburg, Russia in 1977. He holds a PhD (Cand.Polit.Sci) in International Relations from the Institute for the U.S. and Canadian Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences (www.iskran.ru). Since September 2003, Mikhail Troitskiy has taught history of international relations and Russian foreign policy at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). In 2007-2009 he served as deputy dean of MGIMO’s School of Political Affairs. In 1999, he received a Masters degree in International Relations from the School of International Relations, St. Petersburg State University (www.sir.edu). In 2005, Mikhail Troitskiy was awarded a Fulbright-Kennan Senior Scholar Fellowship for the 2005/06 academic year.

Since January 2005, Troitskiy has worked as senior research fellow at the Institute for the U.S. and Canadian Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences (ISKRAN). In 2001-2003, he lectured at the School of World Politics of the State University for Humanities based in ISKRAN. In 2000-2009, Mikhail Troitskiy worked at the Academic Educational Forum on International Relations (www.obraforum.ru) as project assistant, project coordinator, deputy director and acting director (in 2003-2004). In 2003, he became a member of Editorial Board of the International Trends journal (www.intertrends.ru).

Mikhail Troitskiy’s working experience includes an internship at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (February-June 2001), visiting scholarship at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC (August 2005 - February 2006), BP visiting fellowship at Clare Hall, Cambridge University (June-August 2006) and a visiting fellowship at St Antony’s, Oxford University (October 2008).

Apart from MGIMO, Mikhail Troitskiy has lectured at University of California at San Diego, Universities of San Diego and Louisville, Institut d’etudes politiques (Sciences po), Oxford University and the Brookings Institution. Dr. Troitskiy has published in Russian and English on Russia-EU and Russia-NATO relations, Russian foreign policy and domestic politics as well as on U.S. foreign policy and US-EU relations.

Mikhail Troitskiy is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), International Studies Association (ISA) and a life member of Clare Hall, Cambridge University.
